JP Basketball is a local basketball team of youths in the West Ryde area, coached by the client. They needed a logo designed to represent the team.

Needed for both print items and their online presence, the client was looking for a logo that evoked American college and varsity team aesthetics with a colour palette involving green and orange/gold.

From the reference images they provided, it was clear to me that they were looking for an “old-school” American college/varsity team style.

I wanted to try avoid having graphic elements constrained by the emblem shape and have it feel more open. I also wanted to ensure that the motto was well incorporated into the logo as part of the design.

My biggest challenge was using the colours they initially chose – green and black. However, from my talks with the client, I felt that perhaps this was not the colour story they were looking for.

I created the last variation with the intention of making it look more “classic” and simple. This was the variation they decided on.

I had a strong feedback loop occurring in the production of this design and was in contact with the client often. I was able to fine-tune the colours they were looking for as they gave me new references.

This enabled me to continue the design process, constantly improving it and adjusting it to suit their needs.

I explored with colour and made use of my research into this design style to add strokes, patterns, and common iconography like stars and wreaths.

After the final decision was made, I ensured to provide the client with all the necessary files and logo variations, including a full colour, black, white and flat colour version. This was done for both the primary and secondary logos.
