Fading Hope
Illustration

Overview
This project required a poster for a film called “Fading Hope”, but it had to include graphic elements that could adapt to various mediums, media, and sizes.
These mediums included a printed film poster and a smaller press advertisement.
The film “Fading Hope” is a murder-mystery set in a fictional sea-side town, following the story of a lighthouse keeper named George.

Ideation
Due to the film’s genre, I wanted to play with composition and the positioning of graphic elements to reveal the story in a subtle way. I wanted to create intrigue and curiosity in the viewer.
I experimented with many directions and compositions by drawing a great amount of thumbnails to explore as many options as I could before deciding on a final design.
For the colours and style, I was hugely inspired by film noir, art deco, especially Heinz Schulz-Neudamm’s poster for the film “Metropolis”, and Batman: The Animated Series.

Production
The production process involved several programs.
Taking the sketch drawn on paper, I made my graphic elements in Adobe Illustrator. I made it a key point to make the title look wispy and stylised.
To add texture, shading, and colours, I transferred the design to Adobe Photoshop. After settling on the colours and layout, I then used Adobe InDesign to add the body copy and final touches like the logos of the film studio and distributor.
I designed the film poster first, then using that composition as a baseline, I adapted the graphic elements’ positions and sizing to adapt to a different medium, such as the press advertisement.
